Paris Paralympics 2024: Google Doodle Honors Wheelchair Tennis

 The History of Wheelchair Tennis

Wheelchair tennis was pioneered in 1976 by American freestyle skier Brad Parks, who laid the foundation for the sport's rapid rise in popularity. By 1992, wheelchair tennis made its debut in the Paralympic Games.

According to the International Paralympic Committee, "Wheelchair tennis was founded in 1976 following efforts by former US freestyle skier Brad Parks. The sport gained momentum during the 1980s when France became the first European country to establish a dedicated wheelchair tennis program. It officially became part of the Paralympic Games in Barcelona in 1992."

The game largely adheres to standard tennis rules, with slight adaptations for wheelchair use. Players are permitted two bounces of the ball before returning it, and the sport showcases remarkable skill through advanced techniques and strategies, emphasizing the athletes' agility, precision, and strength.
