Malibu Hit by 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake; Southern California Sets Record for Most Mag-4+ Quakes in a Year

 

**UPDATED with more details:** A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck Malibu and nearby areas at 7:28 a.m. today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). A 2.8 aftershock followed just minutes later.
Initially reported as a 5.1 magnitude, the quake was later downgraded. It was centered five miles north of Malibu at a depth of seven miles. No reports of injuries or damage have surfaced so far.
In a televised Q&A following the quake, USGS seismologist Lucy Jones noted, "Southern California has experienced more than the average number of magnitude-4 quakes this year. Typically, we see about 8, but we've had 14 so far, surpassing the previous record of 13."
