MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police on Sunday outside Hard Rock Stadium for a traffic violation but was later released, according to the team.
A video posted on social media shows Hill face down with officers placing him in handcuffs.
The incident occurred about a block away from the stadium. Several teammates witnessed the situation and stopped to offer support, the team added.
Hill is still set to play in the Dolphins' season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
According to sources, Hill was stopped for speeding and then got into a verbal altercation with police, leading to his detention. He was cited for reckless driving.
Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, described the situation as "heartbreaking" and "completely unnecessary." He expressed concerns over how Hill was treated and said it was "mindboggling" to see his client in handcuffs.
"We will investigate and make sure Tyreek's rights were respected," Rosenhaus said, while also expressing gratitude that Hill was unharmed and thanking the team for their assistance in deescalating the incident.
